Oprah/KFC Free Chicken Promotion Goes Awry: Supply runs out in NYC; customers stage sit in.
*On Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey announced she was "hooking up" all of America with a free grilled chicken meal at KFC. By Wednesday night, there were rumors that the free food was causing pandemonium at various locations it quickly sold out. Internet reports of a riot at the Manhattan restaurant on East 42nd Street were untrue, according to Kentucky Fried Chicken spokeswoman Laurie Schalow. She said, "Some customers were upset because they couldn't get their chicken, but there was no riot," she told the Associated Press. However, New York blog Gothamist posted an e-mail and photos from a customer at that Manhattan branch. "I went over to our nearest KFC a few minutes ago ... and chaos ensued," the e-mail read.
